I’ve finally launched a site specifically for myself as Pulsar. I’ve had (and still have) half a dozen other personal sites for myself in other contexts, but I’ve never had one that was furry fandom facing. It’s handy these days to have a single point of contact for yourself, particularly if you’re running your life as a business.
It’s interesting to me to see how a personal site has become something of a necessity again. Twenty years ago, everyone had their own site. It was a big deal then. You own website! It probably sucked, but it was yours. As social media became more of a thing, most people transitioned to having more of a social media presence than a website. Unfortunately in doing that, you reach a point where everything you have and do on the web is actually in someone else’s space. You’ve got an account here or a page there, but it’s at the pleasure of some huge corporation—and they’re all working against your own interests. Having a Twitter account is like being a normal kid at a party that some rich kid is hosting at their house. They don’t mind if you just sort of hang around, but if you butt in to their conversation and say something they don’t like, you get kicked out.
I’ve been aware of this for some time—that my entire furry art business was being run off the backs of other corporations. And while that’s largely inevitable (you have to get the word out somehow), it did mean there was no single good way to reach me. Even worse, if I’m somehow cut off from those social media avenues I don’t really have any other way of getting the word out that I’m still around and working. I suppose this is why anyone maintains multiple social media accounts, but at some point it’s just easier to have your own website.
Finally, I’ve been meaning to get back into writing and blogging more regularly too. Again, I didn’t have a single good place to post long form writing anywhere either, so here we are. The best place to follow my day to day activities is probably still Twitter for now, @pulsarcardinal. I’ll link back to here as I upload art or post something of interest. I’ve also got a permanent link to commissions info which should be helpful to field inquiries, and of course I can always add on to here as the need arises.
